The Trossachs National Park is located on the shores of Loch Lomond in Scotland. It is actually the 4th biggest park in the British Isles, with a total area of 720 square miles. The whole area is filled with hills, 21 Munros (like Ben Lui, Ben More, Beinn Challuim, and Ben Lomond), 19 Corbetts, 2 forest parks and 57 designated nature conservation sites. It is home to 15,600 people.
This park is the first national park to be established by the Scottish Parliament in 2002 – with the second being the Cairngorms National Park. If you will be visiting Loch Lomond, you have to make sure that this park is included in your itinerary.
About the Trossachs National Park
The Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park was fully operational on July 19, 2002. Princess Anne officially opened it on July 24, 2002. The park is divided into four distinct sections: Loch Lomond, Breadalbane, Argyll Forest Park, and The Trossachs.
You will find a lot of interesting things when you explore this park. Apart from covering an area of 720 square miles, it is also 220 miles long. It is located in such a way that 50% of the Scotland population is an hour’s drive from it. That means you can be anywhere in Scotland and still have the opportunity to visit this remarkable park.
The 21 Munros in the park are mountains that rise above 3,000 feet above sea level. The highest of them all is Ben More at 1,174 metres. The smaller ones, the Corbetts, rise between 2,5000 feet to 3,000 feet.
If you think that the Loch Lomond is the only body of water in this national park – you are mistaken. There are 22 large lochs and 50 rivers and burns within this park. That does not even include the numerous lochans and smaller lochs.
The park features two distinct forest parks, the Argyll in Cowal and the Queen Elizabeth in the Trossachs. In this park, you can find The Great Trossachs Forest which is the largest National Nature Reserve in all of UK.
The Trossachs National Park is also where you will see the Ben Lomond National Memorial Park. It is the country’s national memorial for all those who have died in conflict or battle.
